Nanda Devi: Sacred, Snowbound, Spectacular

Advanced
One of the highest peaks in India, Nanda Devi commands awe — for its towering beauty, for its deep connection to local legend, and for the remoteness of the trails that lead to it. This itinerary follows the route to Nanda Devi East, starting from the quiet Himalayan outpost of Munsiyari. Along the way: forested river gorges, high alpine meadows, lost villages, and the kind of Himalayan grandeur you can’t just see — you feel.

One road. Many moments. Here’s how.
Day 1 – Getting to Munsiyari
Arrive in Munsiyari by mid-day or evening. Check in at Wayfarer Retreat Munsiyari — tucked into the forest with Panchachuli views — for an overnight stay.
Day 2 – Into the Gorge
After breakfast, drive 30 km along the Gori Ganga River to Bugdyar. Begin trekking to Nahar Devi (5 km), where camp is set in a narrow gorge beside rushing waters.
Day 3 – Alpine Ascents
Climb above the tree line into open alpine pastures. Pass Lhaspa and Rilkot before reaching Martoli (3,385 m, 13 km) — a remote hamlet with a long trading history.
Day 4 – The First Glimpse
Trek from Martoli to Ganghar (3,260 m, 12 km). Intermittent Himalayan views build anticipation until Nanda Devi East finally reveals itself at day’s end.
Day 5 – Meadow at the Mountain’s Foot
Walk to Pachu (3,950 m, 6 km), an alpine meadow with rhododendrons, glacial ice, and the mountain looming just 5 km away.
Day 6 – Exploring Nanda Devi East
Rest or venture higher — to Nanda Devi East’s snow ridges or Nanda Lampak Base (5,782 m). Wildlife sightings may include blue sheep… or even a snow leopard.
Day 7 – Descending to Burfu
From Pachu, trek down to Burfu (3,350 m, 13 km), where the valley opens up to a panorama of Nanda Devi, the Sanctuary Wall, and Hardeol peaks.
Day 8 – Through Villages & Valleys
Continue downhill to Nahar Devi (2,700 m, 12 km) past Lhaspa and Mapang, with time to pause in the sunlit meadows.
Day 9 – The Last Leg
Walk 5 km from Nahar Devi to Bugdyar, then drive back to Munsiyari for a final night at Wayfarer Retreat.
Day 10 – Farewell to the Mountains
Depart for your next destination, carrying the rare satisfaction of having walked to the foot of a sacred giant.
